Zombie Apocalyse Survival Tips with Akira and Shizuka

The scene follows as Akira, Shizuka, and Kencho leave the camp and are on the way to Gunma village. Akira and Shizuka are seated in the front seat of the caravan, Akira on the drive. Kencho is following them with the motorcycle.

Truck escape

Shizuka complains about Akira’s recklessness, pointing to the fact that they are low on supplies. They stop at a store and go to the storage rooms in the back. There, Akira finds a video camera.

Akira: Hey! Hey! Look at what I found. Woooah, I haven’t seen a video camera since the apocalypse started. Since we did find it…Why don’t we make a video about…uhh…oh ya! Zombie survival tactics before we become zombies.

Shizuka: Haaah?? That is an absolute waste of time. For what purpose would we do that? Also, what if a zombie attacks while you are goofing around here?

Akira: Don’t worry. Kencho is on the lookout, so he will warn us. Doing this has always been on my bucket list and it will be fun, so it’s a-okay. Come on, I am gonna start, so get ready quickly. Lights. Camera. Action!

Shizuka: Sigh…I guess there’s no point arguing with you since it would just waste more time. Let’s get this over with quickly then. Hello everyone, my name is Shizuka Mikazuki, and my cameraman here is Akira Tendou. Despite this being absolutely pointless, we will be sharing a few tips on how to survive the zombie apocalypse, mostly from personal experience.

Akira: (Interrupting) Ya, so the first thing you gotta do is to watch out for your abusive boss from work and start having fun. If you happen to run into them, don’t forget to tackle the-

Shizuka: I would advise the viewer to ignore this idiot. He is way too reckless, and no one should follow his case. Anyway, as I was saying…A few necessities to survive the zombie apocalypse would be to store food in bulk, drink water regularly, and try to perform regular exercise to keep your body in shape, this will be very useful when running away from zombies.

Shizuka wiping sweat

Akira: Beer! beer! We need more beer! and video games, too. This journey would be really boring without beer. Lemme set this camera on a stand and go look for some beer. Hmm…while I am at it, I will get some sweets for you since you like them.

Shizuka: Getting beer is pointless, and carrying it around will just make us slower and an easier target for the zombies. And high-calorie foods aren’t nutritious at all. You can’t put your life in danger for such unnecessary goods.

Shizuka looking back

Akira: Waah!! My precious beer! What will I do without you? Huh, there’s more food here than I expected. I found instant ramen and water bottles. There’s some dried meat here too. Aaahhhh, Meat after so many days. Let’s have a barbeque!

Barbeque preparation

Shizuka: Hmm, I don’t think you can barbeque dried meat, but at least you have some idea about what is useful. Our cameraman seems to have run off on his own yet again, but as I was saying, when you are in a store, try to get all essential commodities in one go. Always keep new batteries, flashlights, and rope on yourself in case of an emergency. It is also useful to keep bottles of vitamin and mineral supplements to maintain a healthy body since it is difficult to maintain a balanced diet at all times.

Akira: Don’t mind me…(happily smuggles beer and video games into his bag) But, you know, beer and games are important too. What's the point of living if we don't have a little fun? Our lives are already in danger, so we should make the best of it and have a blast every day.

Shizuka: (stares in exasperation) You never learn, do you? Don’t take this fool as an example of how to survive an apocalypse. I have no clue how you’re still alive after all the risky things you did. Remember viewer, you should equip yourself with defensive equipment and analyze your environment before taking action. Don’t just jump into danger like a certain someone… (glares at Akira)

Akira: But I want to be a superhero, so it’s only natural for me to jump into danger to save people.

Akiraiger is here!

Shizuka: That isn’t a good reason for you to risk your life and fight zombies. Like that time at the aquarium, you had no reason to fight the zombified shark.

Akira: I don’t need a reason to protect you. I just wanted to do it.

Shizuka: …you’re hopeless. A-anyway, don’t you think that the video is long enough? We should end it before the zombies come looking for us.

Shizuka walking away

Akira: Ohhh, before we end it. (shouting) Oyee Kencho! Don’t you want to be in the video too?

Shizuka: No, he’s always roaming around naked for some odd reason, and having him in the video wouldn’t be appropriate. What if kids watch this video?

Kenichirou: (shouts) HEEYYYY GUUYYYZZZ!!! Zombies!!! They are headed this way!!!

Akira: Oh no! This quickly. I haven’t even packed all my stuff.

Shizuka: The zombies must have heard you shouting and making all that ruckus before.

Kenichirou: Get in the caravan quickly! Look, there are zombies coming from the left, too!!

Akira: Don’t worry, Shizuka. I will protect you. Shark-Suit KICK!

Shizuka:

(Shizuka silently runs away)

Akira: (Shouting) Aaahhhh!! Wait for me. I am coming toooo… (hustling towards the caravan with a pack of Beer)

Shangri La Frontier: A Celebration of the Future of VR Gaming

When anime intertwines with gaming themes, thoughts often gravitate toward the representation of video games. Beyond sports and gambling, the focus narrows down to a theme closer to the media itself: Video Games. Anime, manga, and light novels have consistently featured video game-related narratives, undergoing notable transformations over the years. From adaptations of visual novels and role-playing games to showcasing characters engaged in RPGs, the prevailing theme now illuminates the trajectory of gaming's future: Virtual Reality.

Within the realm of anime, numerous interpretations of virtual worlds have emerged, with the ".hack//" series standing out as an early exploration into a game world from a player's perspective. Reflecting on the intersection of VR and anime, one iconic title surfaces: Sword Art Online. This anime revolutionised the anime landscape and coined the term 'isekai' as a genre. However, did it truly capture the essence of VR's potential? Opinions differ. While Sword Art Online depicted full-dive VR as capable of simulating every conceivable sensation and emotions, it fell short of fully exploring the profound capabilities and significance of such technological marvels. Along its narrative journey, the portrayal of games and VR dwindled to the mere existence of fantasy elements in the real world—a perspective that, in my view, fails to do justice to the immense potential at hand.

SAO, Accel World and .hack//

Since then, numerous series have explored the fusion of games and VR in diverse ways. Whether it's being trapped within a game, as seen in Log Horizon and Overlord, or breaking down the boundaries between games and reality with augmented reality, as depicted in Accel World, whereas, in the past two years have witnessed a saturation of the "isekai into a game or novel" theme. One notable VR gaming anime from a couple of years ago, "Full Dive: This Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life!", centred entirely on the VR gaming experience, highlighting the challenges and discomforts associated with it. However, despite these varied narratives, none of them truly delved into the potential of a VR experience. We were yet to see an anime that envisioned what VR could truly offer. The most significant issue? Many of us failed to recognize the bias and ignorance inherent in our perspectives, overlooking what could potentially mark one of the most significant evolutions in the gaming industry since the advent of DVD and PlayStation.

Everyone's got their go-to recreational activity, a hobby that keeps them engaged. Some dive into books, others binge-watch TV shows or movies, and then there are those who find their joy in gaming. Now, here's a question for the gamers out there. Ever delved into the worlds of Elder Scrolls, RDR, or any other single-player RPG? Did it hit the sweet spot for you? Ventured into the realm of MMORPG, maybe something like Albion? And the big question: have you ever strapped on a VR headset? Now, let's cut to the chase—have you ever wondered what it would be like to jump into an open-world VR-MMORPG, connecting with players worldwide, where your character and gameplay choices are entirely in your hands, offering a fully immersive VR experience? It's not a question you come across every day, right? So, how was it for you? Thrilling? Heart-pounding?

"Shangri La Frontier" offers a captivating exploration, going beyond mere expectations! The protagonist, an avid gamer with a liking for subpar titles, has navigated through every game marred by terrible gameplay, poor mechanics, bugs, or unfavourable deals for regular players. Upon encountering a true masterpiece, the protagonist, more than anyone else, discovers the beauty within the game—intricate mechanics, splendid physics, precise controls, and a complex yet immersive plot. With a vast player base, a myriad of classes and occupations, and a plethora of guilds for various activities, the anime transcends the typical narrative of a high schooler with exceptional gaming skills. On a deeper level, it delves into realms beyond mere tomfoolery, with the author's clear vision evident in meticulous world-building, well-balanced power scaling, and myriads of abilities seamlessly integrated together, all the while maintaining the constant reminder of the virtual gaming environment. The animation is nothing short of impressive, leaving audiences in awe, and the action choreography rivals even the most renowned shows, solidifying "Shangri La Frontier" as the unexpected standout of the Winter 2023 season. While it may not receive the full credit it merits, this anime has unquestionably etched itself into the annals of VR-based anime.

Some girl fights an ostrich(?)

"Shangri La Frontier" masterfully presents the ideal fusion of plot, setting, and animation. It stands out as an anime devoid of stakes and explicit objectives, featuring a protagonist who, though adept at gaming, navigates through the virtual world without the typical "I am the hero" aura. Instead, he grapples with challenges, faces mortality, experiences frustration, gets cornered, panics, yet rises to fight again—an authentic portrayal of the struggles and triumphs familiar to any regular gamer.

The storyline lacks overtly distinctive elements, but it is precisely the simplicity of the premise, the depth of the setting, the ordinariness of the plot, and the high-quality animation that converge to create an absolute masterpiece. "Shangri La Frontier" not only showcases the infinite possibilities of an ideal MMO-RPG but also underscores the boundless potential inherent in a full-dive VR system.

This show not only showcased the depth and potential of technology but also delved into the intricacies of the player base. It explored how many of us swiftly skip through the long cutscenes at the start, hurriedly create our characters, disregard tutorials, and eagerly plunge into the game. "Shangri La Frontier" delves into the existence of player killers, the players' avid pursuit of superior equipment and skills, and the perplexity and chaos experienced when encountering unexpected scenarios in a new game.

The anime captures the essence of how most players resort to online forums, such as Reddit, to seek solutions or engage in discussions about a particular scenario. It mirrors the common inclination to search for cheats, tips, and tricks. While not every aspect is played out by the same character, observing the various characters and scenarios encountered by the protagonist in "Shangri La Frontier" reveals a true and accurate representation of a masterpiece VRMMORPG being played by individuals worldwide.

A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special: A Faithful Adaptation or Not?

Manhwas, or Korean comics, have been getting adaptations over the past few years, thanks to Crunchyroll for the most part. While some adaptations (such as Tower of God and The God of High School) have been praised well, there are some (like Noblesse) that have failed to meet the expectations of the manhwa readers and anime-only watchers alike. With anime adaptations coming every season now, we would be focusing on the Autumn 2023 anime adaptation of the manhwa “A Returner’s Magic Should Be Special.”

Anime Banner

Premise

After the world has been engulfed by the otherworldly calamity, the Shadow Worlds, Desir Herrman, and the final survivors put up a final struggle, only to lose to the Destruction Dragon. As Desir meets his end, he finds himself 13 years in the past. With the knowledge of the future, Desir reassembles his friends to change the impending doom the future has in store for them.

Old Desir

After the much-hyped Solo Leveling adaptation announcement, I was surprised to see an anime adaptation of this manhwa. Despite my slight disappointment in the GoHS adaptation (primarily because they cut some parts from the manhwa), I chose to give this a chance because of how I felt like this might be a good adaptation and might have some good scenes like Tower of God did (specifically the scene where Baam protects Rachel by becoming Shinsu) which the manhwa did not illustrate as well as the anime did. As the season has come to an end, here’s what I feel about this.

Pros

The anime managed to showcase the action scenes really well. While the animation does not compare to some other anime in this season such as Shield Hero S3 or Eminence in Shadow S2, the anime managed to show the fight scenes well. This is often observed as a plus point among various anime adaptations.

The voice acting also resembled what your average reader would have in mind while reading the manhwa. While it is an issue you’d often see in English voice acting, some anime have the same issue even in the Japanese voice acting (generally but not necessarily seasonal trash isekais). It was definitely a good thing that this anime did not suffer the same cursed fate.

Cons

While the animation did not have any issues, I personally felt like they ruined the characters for me. While they did not change the characters majorly, they managed to make some changes which… let’s just say did not appeal to me as a manhwa reader (Oh who am I kidding? I got triggered by it!!!) While it is understandable that there would be some changes in the style as they move from a webtoon to an anime (especially when sometimes even the webtoon art is simplistic), the way they managed to add a glossy touch to everyone’s hair and the rigidity in the shapes felt like they were trying too hard. The biggest disappointment for me was how they represented Pram Schneider.

Pram Schneider (manhwa)
Pram Schneider (anime)

I’ll try to keep it as spoiler-free as possible. Pram Schneider, despite having cute femboy-ish looks and being the character whom Romantica finds cute like a puppy, is shown to be a rather fierce ally of Desir. While the manhwa also showcases the clinginess that Pram directs toward Desir, the anime felt like it overdid it. While it felt like a minor detail that was appreciated in the manhwa as a minor character trait, the anime made those interactions. Especially in the anime original shopping scene in episode 10, it really made me cringe, to the point I slightly regretted watching it. (Honestly, if they really wanted to make Pram cutesy, they could’ve made him similar to Iruma-Kun.) The anime has made me feel something straight out of a JoJo scene.

I'll never forgive the Japanese!

Characters aside, there was one more major issue that I had with this anime; the anime-original story parts. While this mainly includes the fight scenes, it also includes the scene from episode 10 I mentioned before. Although I called the animation in the same commendable, the scripting made it a bit too lengthy for my preference. While a portion of it is understandable to explain the setup and the background characters, they could have been simplified a bit more. While it is understandable that the studio has to make some changes to choose how much of the story fits in one season and to ensure that they spread it over the course of the number of episodes they have, I would have preferred if they had stuck to the manhwa’s storyboarding and pacing.

Conclusion

If someone wants to watch a season of an anime, without really worrying about the original source or anything, just to spend some time, this anime would be a decent one to watch. However, as an adaptation, it feels like it has gone over the top in many aspects, which itself is what makes this an adaptation that I did not enjoy that much. I would not have minded watching a slightly less lustrous or plain adaptation as long as the execution was good. The majority of why I watched the anime this season was just to see the plot progression (even though I literally binged 250 chapters of the manhwa days before I started the season and remembered the story.) Due to the excessive styling of characters and anime-specific changes, for an avid manhwa reader like me, this felt like it was not that faithful of an adaptation.

The Diversity of Lifeforms in Tensura

In the fantastical world brought to life by 8bit Studio, the story of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime quickly captured the hearts of fans. We follow the story of Satoru Mikami, a 37-year-old whose life tragically ended while protecting a colleague's girlfriend. He wakes up in a new world, reborn as Rimuru Tempest, a slime and embarks on extraordinary adventures. Through encounters with diverse races like Goblins, Ogres, Lizardmen, Humans, and Demons, Rimuru carves out his unique path in this magical realm. In the series, we learned many details about these different species, which we have tried to compile into this article.

Monster Class:

Slimes:

Slimes are mindless creatures who do not possess the ability to see or hear and do not possess self-awareness or gender. Slimes utilise their elastic bodies to translocate through a bouncing motion from one location to another. Slimes do not engage in the activities of eating, breathing, or sleeping. Unlike many other races that must acquire the skill of self-regeneration, slimes are inherently endowed with the capacity for self-regeneration from birth.

Slime

Goblin family:

Goblins:

Goblins are a race of weak, common mob monsters. Displaying human-like features, Goblins possess intelligence and speech, forming communities in villages with an elder as their leader. Goblins typically exhibit a frail physical constitution, resulting in challenges when engaged in combat.

Goblins Goblins

Hobgoblins/Goblinas:

Male goblins undergo evolution into Hobgoblins, while their female counterparts transform into Goblinas. These evolved forms demonstrate heightened intelligence, improved health, and increased muscularity compared to their goblin predecessors.

Goblinas Goblinas

Wolves family:

Direwolves:

Direwolves, inspired by real wolves, display fierceness and a penchant for hunting weaker prey, mirroring the pack dynamics observed in their real-world counterparts. Inherently more potent than Goblins, a direwolf pack may comprise up to 100 members, relying on their sharp fangs and claws for power. Direwolves are remarkably loyal to their master. The collective elevation in rank occurs when a solitary direwolf is granted a name, exemplifying the interconnected fate shared by all pack members.

Direwolves

Tempest Wolves:

Evolved from direwolves, the notable species known as Tempest wolves owe their name to Rimuru Tempest. Characterised by a main elemental wind attribute, Tempest wolves possess remarkable abilities, capable of inciting storms merely by wagging their tails. Additionally, they can alter their size and exhibit wind-like swiftness. The establishment of a specific bond allows other creatures to summon Tempest wolves.

Tempest wolves

Tempest Star Wolves:

The Tempest Star Wolf is the evolved form of Tempest Wolves, distinguished by two horns and double the size. This evolution grants them a formidable special attack known as Black Lightning.

Tempest Star Wolf

Ogre Family:

Ogres:

Ogres, high-level monsters of Japanese origin, exhibit a distinct cultural influence, as evident in their attire resembling Japanese armour and katana-like swords. Proficient in combat and refined magical abilities, Ogres showcase incredible strength and possess the potential for further growth, distinguishing them as formidable while living alongside other monsters in the forest. Notably, their advanced swordsmanship sets them apart from mere monsters. Evolving from Hobgoblins and Goblinas, Ogres form a critical link in the evolutionary chain. Before the Orcs' massive attack on Ogres, there were 300 Ogres in the Great Jura Forest, but only 6 survived.

Ogres

The surviving 6 Ogres

Kijin:

Kijin, being the evolutions of Ogres, represent a high-class monster race with exceptional abilities. Each Kijin possesses remarkable potential in various fields, surpassing humans in artistry, whether in magic, swordsmanship, ninja skills, elemental mastery, and more. Renowned for their formidable power, Kijin are invaluable allies in warfare, with their abundance of magicules surpassing their Ogre predecessors.

Kijin

Orc family:

Orcs:

Orcs stand markedly weaker than Ogres, relying on their strength in numbers for compensation. Resembling pigs in appearance, Orcs are less intelligent, even among monsters, which is compensated by their substantial muscular power.

Orcs Orcs

Orc Lord:

The Orc Lord, a distinctive monster, commands fear as he leads a large number of Orcs despite their typical aversion to forming groups. Ruling through intimidation, the Orc Lord possesses an inherent "Starved" ability that influences all his followers. This ability allows the user to acquire the strength and abilities of their victim upon consumption, with the caveat of perpetual hunger. Importantly, any abilities obtained by an Orc under the Orc Lord are instantly shared among all Orcs, including the Orc Lord himself.

Orc Lord

Orc King:

The Orc King, the paramount leader of Orcs, boasts remarkable regenerative capabilities and commands the Orcs with great strength. While an orc transforms physically into an Orc Lord upon becoming an Orc King, it is crucial to note that the emotional aspect diverges from the terror-inducing control characteristic of the Orc Lord. Unlike the Orc Lord, the Orc King does not possess the ability called "Starved". Emphasising his physical prowess, the Orc King is a mighty Orc Lord.

Orc King Orc King

High Orcs:

High Orcs, the evolved form of Orcs, exhibit heightened strength and durability compared to their predecessors. Endowed with remarkable physical stamina, they excel in prolonged labour activities. Additionally, High Orcs demonstrate an impressive aptitude for swiftly acquiring simple skills, such as construction and other physical abilities inherent to humans.

Orcs are considered descendants of the beastmen. There is also Orc Disaster, evolved from Orc Lord, who possesses the seed of a demon lord.

Lizardmen family:

Lizardmen:

Lizardmen, humanoid creatures with a reptilian resemblance, inhabit marshlands and adopt a tribe-like social structure led by a figure known as the "Chieftain." Despite not being inherently powerful, Lizardmen surpass Orcs in hierarchy due to their intelligence and intricate social organisation. Building their armies on numerical strength, they equip themselves with armour and conventional weaponry. The Lizardmen take pride in their lineage as descendants of dragons, a concept of common occurrence in fantasy realms. Notably, the Chieftain possesses a significant artifact called the Vortex Spear, enhancing the wielder's magical powers and symbolising leadership akin to a crown.

Lizardmen Lizardmen

Dragonewts:

Dragonewts, the evolved forms of Lizardmen, may have different appearances based on their lineage, individual characteristics, evolutionary traits and magical influences. Distinguishing them from their predecessors, Dragonewts feature wings, providing them with aerial capabilities absent in the Lizardmen, who evolved primarily for swift movement in marshy environments.

Humans and Humanoids Class:

Humans:

There are humans, as always intelligent, greedy, prejudice-making, cowards, and god-believers. There are a lot of human kingdoms, and most weren’t happy with the rise of Jura.

Otherworlders:

Otherworlders are individuals who have been reincarnated or transported from another world into the fantasy world where the occurs place. They usually retain memories of their past life and possess unique skills.

Summons:

Summons refer to creatures or beings brought into the fantasy world through magical or summoning rituals. Unlike Otherworlders, summons are typically creatures or entities given powers according to the ceremony's purpose. Summons are not reincarnated with the memory from the past life.

Beastman:

Beastmen are humanoid creatures with characteristics of some animals, such as cats, lions, snakes, etc. Each category of Beastmen has a different type of strength. This race was created by hybridising humans and magical beasts.

Demon Class:

Lesser Demons:

The bottom-most rank among demons, they still possess good knowledge of elemental magic and have high resistance against any sort of magic.

Lesser Demons

Greater Demons/Arch Demons:

The appearance of greater demons is different for each individual. Though they possess arms, legs and a face like humans, they aren’t humanoid overall. They might have abnormal arms, scales, goat-like legs, etc. However, they do possess general characteristics of demons like horns, claws etc,

Greater Demons

Primordial Demons:

These are the absolute beings among demons whose existence traces back to the dawn of time. They possess such tremendous power that even saying their name is taboo in the human world. There are only 7 primordial demons.

Primordial Black Primordial Red Primordial Green Primordial Blue

The above are the 4 out of 7 Primordial Demons shown in Anime.

Other than these, there are other demons who rank somewhere in between or parallel to given ones. Demons are strong against angels and weak against spirits.

Dragon Class:

Dragons:

Dragons are said to be the strongest species in the world. They have massive muscular bodies covered in scales. We have seen the appearance of a sky dragon in the Anime.

True Dragons:

True dragons are the highest-ranking beings in existence, excluding only the supreme deity. There are currently 4 true dragons in existence.

Veldora Velzard

Other than these, there are also some species directly related to dragons, such as Charybdis, who was born from the magicules of Veldora. Demon Lord Milim Nava is also associated with dragons being a hybrid between a true dragon and a human.

Spirits Class:

Spirits:

Spirits, magical entities, come in varying forms. Smaller and weaker spirits appear as colourful dots, resembling stars in the night sky. In contrast, greater spirits can adopt specific shapes and possess distinct personalities. These mystical beings reside in a place known as the Dwelling of Spirits. Each spirit is associated with one of the elemental attributes, including Space, Earth, Water, Wind, Fire, Light, Darkness, and Time. The governance of spirits is vested in the singular Queen of Spirits, a unique entity that consistently undergoes reincarnation.

Spirits Spirits

Queen of Spirits:

Ramiris, the singular Queen of Spirits throughout history, is known by various titles, including Ramiris of Labyrinth, Guide of Saints, Fairy of Labyrinth, and Demon Lord Ramiris. Pioneering in spirit engineering, she often creates toys using spirits for fun. She had become a demon lord because she had “fallen”. Ramiris is tasked with bestowing divine protection upon heroes, claiming impartiality. She plays an essential role in maintaining balance within the world.

Ramiris Ramiris

Dryads:

Dryads, specialised spirits and embodiments of nature serve as the dedicated caretakers of the Great Forest of Jura. Typically concealing themselves, they possess comprehensive knowledge of all events within the forest. In their role as guardians, Dryads administer divine judgment to those who pose harm to the forest.

Dryad

In conclusion, while other fascinating races like Harpies and Vampires have been briefly introduced, their full depth remains unexplored within the anime thus far. This tantalising glimpse, however, underscores the author's dedication to meticulous world-building, leaving us eager to delve deeper into the intricacies of this meticulously crafted universe. Thank you for joining me on this exploration.
